What I learned from Otto Preminger’s “Hurry Sundown”
“Hurry Sundown” is a movie about issues. Issues like racism and classism and whatnot, so there are obviously a lot of lessons to be learned. Here are a few that I have gleaned:
- Michael Caine is not very good at doing a Southern accent. As a Southerner, I can honestly say that we do not all sound drunk/stupid. In fact, most people I know do not have an accent at all.
- People in the south after World War II often wore overalls. Seriously, it was like everyone was part of a great overall conspiracy. In addition to this, it was not very common to wear a shirt under your overalls.
- Michael Caine is really good at running. He runs away crying in at least a quarter of the scenes he was in. THAT IS A LOT OF CRYING AND RUNNING. I guess I should commend him because that seems like a very hard thing to do.
- When buying dynamite, you cannot take the charges in the same trip! I’m not even sure what that means, but someone made a really big deal of it during the movie.
- Do not abandon your children by tying them down to a crib. It’s just not a good idea. It could mean that they don’t talk until they are 6 or something. If you’ve actually done number 6, then definitely do not leave that same child locked in a office where he will inexplicably give himself brain damage while you run off to see what people are blowing up.
- Jane Fonda is very beautiful. No doy, no duh.
